How I Got A Super Defined Twistout…

During Christmas break I went to Maryland to visit my best friend and decided to leave my wig at home. During this time I experienced my best twistout so far! Since then, I’ve tried other combinations to get similar results and nothing else has worked. So I figure it must the the product combo I used from my favorite line, Oyin Handmade.

I started on freshly washed hair and applied Oyin Hair Dew as my leave-in. I followed by applying Oyin’s Boing next. Boing is completely new to me and is meant to be an all purpose product (moisturizer and hold). Finally I applied Oyin’s Shine and Define and proceeded to twist. My twisting method and process was the same.

The result was super soft hair with excellent hold that looked like a straw set. My hair was also shiny and just looked so good! On that trip I ran out of Shine and Define, so once I got back I tried duplicating the results with various gels and nothing else worked. The only thing I did not like about the Oyin combo is that it started to cause build up during the week, mainly due to the Boing product and me reapplying product/twisting each night.

These results are definitely worth trying again and I will do so once I’m done using up some of my other products.

Updated…a few months later…I received a product in my CurlBox and got similar results, but without buildup. The product is EcoCocktail and I believe it is by the same people that make the Eco Styler Gel. The only downside is that I have not been able to find this product in any of the stores in my area.

Wash Day + Blowout

Last weekend I didn’t have to work so I decided to blow out my hair and try a hot oil treatment. I used the Jamaican Black Castor Oil with Rosemary for my hot oil treatment.  I have to say that … Continue reading

Wash day regimen + Routine Update (4 to 6 months)

I wore my hair out for a little while and then decided to go back to wearing my wig daily.  While sitting under the dryer deep conditioning I figured why not document what I’m doing now.

The players…..

I do this process once a week, usually on the weekends.
1. Cowash hair with As I Am Coconut Cowash.
2. Deep condition with heat for at least 20 minutes with Oyin Honey Hemp Conditioner.
3. Apply Oyin Hair Dew as a leave-in.
4. Seal and twist hair using Oyin Burnt Sugar Pomade.
***Tonight will be my first night using the Jamaican Black Castor Oil in months.****

Sometimes I will switch products, but the process and steps are always the same.  I wear a satin bonnet to bed and don’t touch my hair again until the next wash day.

Having a busy schedule really helps to distract me from having hand-in-fro syndrome.  Wash days are when I take the time to really play in my hair.  At week’s end my hair is still really moisturized without adding any extra product during the week.

Big Chop Files…Summer Haircare Regimen and Products

It’s been a little over a month (going on 2 months now) since my 3rd big chop and my regimen since has been super simple. I rarely manipulate my hair and it has grown so much already. I’ve been wearing a wig daily, but i wanted to document what I use on my actual hair.  I must mention that I do not moisturize and seal daily…more like on wash day only.

1. Jamaican Black Castor Oil with Rosemary – I found this at Sally Beauty Supply and it was the last one so I snatched it up.  I use it on my edges occasionally.

2. Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus CoWash – I didn’t bring my cowash from home because I planned on buying a cheap Suave conditioner.  I couldn’t find the one I like, so I purchased this instead.  I co-wash once a week, usually on the weekend.

3. Neutrogena Triple Moisture Silk Touch Leave In – This was a staple when I was relaxed and I have a lot left so I’m trying to use it up.  I like it on my natural hair too.

4. Carol’s Daughter Healthy Hair Butter – Another product from my relaxed days.  I apply this after the leave-in.20140621-230106-82866302.jpg

5. Satin Bonnet – A must for bed.

6. Silk Elements Liquid Styling Gel – I actually got this for free when I purchased the JBCO from Sally’s.  This stuff is really moisturizing!

7. Shampoo Brush – I use this to detangle my hair on wash days.

So my regimen is to co-wash, apply leave-in, moisturize/seal, and apply gel since it has extra moisturizing properties.  I sleep with my satin bonnet each night and I don’t use anything on my hair during the week – I simply plop my wig on and go.

The products will definitely change as I use things up and the regimen will change as my hair gets longer, but this is it for now.
